2023 Basketball World Cup's championship round

The first game in the last round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 qualifiers, which will take place at Alexandria's El-Shatby Hall, is less than 24 hours away. The 2023 World Cup, which will be hosted in three nations—Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines—from August 25 to September 10, includes the Egyptian national team in the second group that qualifies.

Egypt's participation at the European Championships in stages

The Egyptian national basketball team attended the 2014 World Cup in Spain, and the Pharaohs are hoping to finish first or second in the second group to make a World Cup comeback after a nine-year absence.

With 16 points from 7 victories and 2 defeats, the Egyptian national team is ranked second in Group Two in the second round of qualifiers, trailing only group leader South Sudan (17 points from 8 victories and 1 loss).

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is ranked fifth with 13 points, Senegal is ranked third with 15, Tunisia is ranked fourth with 14, Cameroon is ranked last with 11, and Tunisia is ranked fifth overall.

The following dates were released by the International Basketball Federation for the Egyptian national team's qualification games

  • Tomorrow, February 24, at precisely 7 p.m., in Alexandria's Al-Shatby Hall, the Egyptian national team will play Tunisia in the tenth round. 

  • Next Saturday, February 25, at precisely seven o'clock in the evening, Egypt's national team will play Cameroon in the 11th round. 

  • The final game between Egypt and South Sudan will take place the following Sunday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Alexandria's Kamal Al-Shatby Hall. 

As there are five teams from Africa competing in the World Cup, two teams from the second group in which Egypt is placed also advance, along with the best third-place team from the two groups.

Egypt's participation at the European Championships in stages

In Egypt, basketball was played in two stages:

Stage 1: In 1937 AD Riga, Latvia, Egypt participated in the inaugural European Basketball Championship. They suffered defeats at the hands of Italy, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Estonia.

Stage two: Egypt made an appearance in the Prague tournament after a 10-year absence. It stood out for doing far better than before, winning six out of seven games, and finished third behind the Soviet Union and the Czech Republic.

Clubs and the Egyptian League are part of the Federation

With little more than 10 clubs, the first basketball federation was founded in 1930 AD with members from Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut, and Port Said. Except for the Royal Guard squad, all clubs were foreign, and the Egyptian Federation joined the International Federation. in 1956 A.D., and the Arab Federation In 1932 AD, young men competed in and won the first competition the organization sponsored. 

Every year in Egypt, the Egyptian Basketball Premier League is played. 16 teams, including Zamalek, Al-Ittihad, Al-Jazira, and Al-Ahly, Egypt's women's basketball team, Al-Ahly, fight for it. It is governed by the Egyptian Federation.
